Casablanca Bookclub Edition #5

02.12.0097

The SCHIRN BOOKCLUB edition enters its fifth round with the exhibition Casablanca Art School. A Postcolonial Avant-Garde 1962 - 1987 enters its fifth round. In the spirit of the interdisciplinary collaboration that was practiced at the Casablanca Art School, the SCHIRN BOOKCLUB illuminates the contents of the exhibition on the basis of selected texts.

The starting point is the situation in Morocco after independence in 1956. In the first chapter, a literary text by Leïla Slimani and the memoirs of the artist and teacher at the Casablanca Art School Mohamed Melehi focus on the spirit of optimism in the country and at the art school. The second session will focus on Arabic poetry. A poem by Abdellatif Laâbi forms the prelude, followed by an introduction to Moroccan poetry by Ahmed Bouanani. The publication also brings together texts and poems by Mohammed Bennis, Abdellatif Laâbi, Huda Ablan and Ahmad Al-Awadi. Bringing art into the public space and thus developing the socio-political impact of artistic work played a central role in the work of the Casablanca Art School.  The texts in the third chapter therefore pose questions about the influence that art can exert in public spaces. In her text, Sarah Dornhof provides insights into the history of the Cultural Moussem of Asilah, a Moroccan festival for art in public spaces. Chourouq Nasri focuses on the role of street art in the wider Arab world, particularly in the period following the Arab Spring.
